A Message From Tony

Happy New Year!

Dan is travelling to distributor meetings this month (in his words he has ‘a lot of windshield time’) so I took the opportunity to usurp the editor’s chair in his absence. So you may find some odd English spelling creeps into this newsletter.

I can remember a time when in this beverage industry you could crawl back into the office in the New Year and quietly hibernate until spring but now it’s become one of the busiest months of the year. Thankfully we love what we do. When you are at school they never tell you that you will be able to spend your adult life thinking about beer, talking about beer, tasting beer, and getting paid to do it.

2012 looks like being a very exciting year. We are getting rave reviews for our Innis & Gunn Irish Whiskey Cask. Like a parent I am not supposed to have favourites (that’s an English spelling) but I think it’s the best beer we have ever brewed. Over Christmas my brother-in-law not only drank and enjoyed it, but he asked to buy a case i.e. actually pay for it-so I knew we were on to a winner.

Over Christmas, our founder and brewer, Dougal Sharp came across an old and battered book (a book so old that it wasn’t electronic) which contains recipes for beer-making from ‘auld’ Scotland. As an Englishman, I have noticed that these Scots know a thing or two about making drink (they invented Single Malt Whiskey and illicit distilling) and some of these old recipes sound mouth-watering. So, fingers crossed, I think that we have some great new beers to look forward to this year.

So what is there in this newsletter? We are going to introduce some new people who have joined Innis & Gunn USA in the last couple of months. Then we found that Beer Connoisseur magazine had published an interesting article on Innis & Gunn before Christmas, and we have asked them if we can reprint it here (they are also making a special discount subscription offer to readers of our newsletter, see below). Finally we have published the full details of Irish Whiskey Cask, which has now landed in the USA. Interestingly in the photography the beer looks to be a deep tan colour, presumably because the photographer has beamed some retina-destroying light beam through it, but in real life, in the glass-and I can speak from experience-the beer looks as black as night.

Cheers!

Innis & Gunn Irish Whiskey Cask is now in the USA with a wide-scale program of tastings and events lined up for February and March. Deep, dark, intense velvet chocolate, on the nose and on the palate, wonderfully balanced by the vanilla and oakiness that you always find in Innis & Gunn.

Malts: Chocolate malt and roast barley.

Hops: Fuggles

ABV: 7.4%

Vol: 330ml (basket pack)

IBU: 26

Wood: Rare barrels that had previously been used to mature triple distilled Irish Whiskey.

Maturation: Three separate maturations follow fermentation: oak maturation, cold maturation and in a bottle.

Nose: Chocolate and treacle with notes and vanilla and oak.

Palate: Rich and intense dark chocolate flavour complemented by an almost soothing oak, vanilla sweetness.
